Description

Protests continue in Bahrain over the revocation of citizenship of top Shia cleric Ayatollah Isa Qassim. Police clashed with the demonstrators in the village of Eker, south of the capital Manama. Regime forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, a sit-in is being held outside the house of Sheikh Qassim in the village of Diraz. Demonstrators condemned the regime’s crackdown on dissent and chanted slogans in support of the top cleric. Manama stripped the cleric of his citizenship last month. The move followed a series of heavy-handed tactics by the Al Khalifa regime including suspending al-Wefaq; the country’s largest opposition movement. The tiny Persian Gulf kingdom has been witnessing anti-regime protests since 2011.
