Description

Song written by, Kris Kristofferson Song featured in the movie Cisco Pike. Originally from the album, The Silver Tongued Devil and I is the second album by Kris Kristofferson, released in 1971 on Monument Records. In the spoken word intro to "The Pilgrim, Chapter 33", Kristofferson says he wrote the song about various celebrities. Two of those mentioned, Johnny Cash and Dennis Hopper, later performed the song on The Johnny Cash Show. .In the 1976 film Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) buys this album for Betsy (Cybill Shepherd) after she describes him, quoting a phrase from "The Pilgrim, Chapter 33": "He's a prophet, he's a pusher, partly truth and partly fiction, a walking contradiction.").The song "Epitaph" is about Janis Joplin, whom Kristofferson had been dating at the time of her death. The Silver Tongued Devil and I reached the pop Top 20, Kristofferson's career high on that chart, and the country Top Five; thus, Kristofferson made the transition from being a successful songwriter to a successful recording artist.
