Description

The first life hole has been drilled through as of 18:30 Monday to rescue the trapped miners at a gypsum mine which collapsed last Friday in east China's Shandong Province. Rescuers are now yelling and knocking on the pipe of the 221.6-meter-deep life hole, trying to make contact with the 14 miners trapped in the No. 4 mine. "If there is someone below, he will give us a response by pulling the cable, and then we will feel it," said Yu Tao, leader of the training department of the Linyi detachment of the Armed Police in Shandong. "During the process, we try to send signals to contact the trapped miners by shouting and knocking. We knock on the pipe regularly and inconsistently," said Yang Tao, head of an emergency branch hospital of the China Coal Geology Engineering Corporation in Beijing. According to Yang, the life hole can be used to make contact with the trapped miners and send food to them. "The first hole can be used to make contact with the trapped miners and send food at the first time, so is the second hole," said Yang. The diameter of the No. 3 life hole is as large as 72 centimeters. Once it's drilled through, the trapped miners can be lifted out. In order to speed up the drilling schedule, the rescue headquarters has brought foreign experts on the scene to direct the operations. "Technical requirements are stricter for the life hole with a diameter of more than 70 centimeters, so we have invited two German experts to follow the whole process to speed up," said Ma Kun, deputy mayor of Linyi City.
