Anthrax Decontamination at Brentwood Postal Facility USPS Washington D.C.

Description

Recorded during the historic anthrax contamination/decontamination at the Brentwood Postal Facility in Washington D.C. When this video was made, very little contamination had yet been removed. This is a video of the initial evaluation of various air sampling procedures, first tries with diverse sampling materials and/or "testing" a variety of protocols which often have different aims and expectations about the resulting data. The contamination occurred after the first, (and hopefully only) biological weapons attack (Anthrax Spore were sent through the U.S. Mail) on our nations capitol, and and other east coast metropolises. The attack occurred in the weeks following 9/11. I did industrial hygiene for Federal OSHA at the time, Postal employees are within Federal OSHA's jurisdiction, and these employees required better information. We needed to know if the on-going clean-up was, or was-not, effectively destroying, all of the anthrax spores and /or removing them and/or merely deactivating them into a quasi-eternal sleep, as spores with a very diminished capacity to re-animate and become the dangerous active anthrax agent. I was given the task of preparing a methodical procedure to verify (and quantify) the efficacy of the decontamination. This video records the first attempts at sampling the air for anthrax spores, trying out several different types of sampling media, to determine if any medium, was a better collector. You can see the letter distributing machinery that was contaminated when the letter(s) containing anthrax spore were processed. We were running that letter distributor, to see if we could measure an increase of biologically active aerosol (anthrax spore), "kicked-up" by the machine when it was running. We were successful in doing so, using a real-time, direct-reading monitor that the Canadian "Bio-Haz" team had brought with them, to D.C. Also note the many CDC microbiologists (actually Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) Officers) present, conducting similar work. The images are somewhat blurry because the camera was kept sealed inside zip-lock bags, to protect them from contamination and from the Clorox solution that was sprayed and poured all over crews and equipment coming out of that facility. I also have a similar (but different issues) video recorded at the Morgan postal facility in Manhattan N.Y.. that I will post soon. Of high historical value, if a bit long and boring to watch all of it, ya know. and I probably should annotate these videos along the time line, with commentary describing what exactly is happening at that time. A lot of work, but I'll be glad to when I can get to it. I just thought it important to put these up for now.
