Description

VO Laos and the Republic of Korea (ROK) have expressed satisfaction with their ongoing cooperation for development and agreed INTRO: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith led a Lao delegation to attend the 4th Mekong-ROK Foreign Ministers' Meeting. He also held bilateral talks with his ROK counterpart, Yun Byung-se in Seoul on the sidelines of the 4th Mekong-ROK Foreign Ministers' Meeting recently. STORY: The foreign ministers of ROK and the five countries met in Seoul on Tuesday to adopt a three-year action plan that calls for expanding cooperation in such areas as infrastructure, green growth, and information and communications technology. Republic of Korea also agreed to contribute more to the Mekong-ROK Cooperation Fund over the next three year period. The fund will be used for the implementation of their priority areas of cooperation, particularly infrastructure development for Asean connectivity, a feasibility study project for railway development between Laos and Vietnam and the improvement of navigation along the Mekong River. The six priority areas of their cooperation also include water resource development, agriculture and rural development, and human resource development. The ROK has assisted the socio-economic development of Laos over past years averaging about US$40 million annually. The assistance was mainly in the areas of infrastructure development, agriculture, education and health with nine ongoing projects. Republic of Korea is in the process of issuing low-interest loan projects from its economic development cooperation fund for 2014-17. The good model for Laos-ROK cooperation projects are those related to agriculture development with participation from local people. A pilot project is now operating in Tholakhom district, Vientiane province.
