Finland: Putin discusses NATO's Baltic Sea operation with Finnish President Niinisto

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a press conference on Friday with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto, in Naantali, both commented on the recent incidents over Baltic Sea, where NATO and Russian planes have been reported to be flying without transponders. SOT, Sauli Niinisto, Finnish President (Finnish): "This kind of a small step could be the way to avoid accidents, and because of that I brought up this lot talked issue of flying without transponders." SOT, Sauli Niinisto, Finnish President (Finnish): "And so I have suggested that in the Baltic Sea region, the aim would be to agree jointly that transponders are utilised and that without them there are no flights." SOT, Sauli Niinisto, Finnish President (Finnish): "As to what I meant with the Baltic Sea region, we are very aware that in the Baltic countries and elsewhere, there is fear of Russia." SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "And even more, after I return to Moscow, I will give an instruction that this issue (flying without transponders over Baltic Sea), will be brought up to the agenda in a council meeting between NATO and Russia, which is supposed to take place after NATO's Warsaw Summit in Brussels." SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian President (Russian): "When our troops move inside our own territory, it is pronounced as threatening action, but when NATO organises drills near Russian borders it, for some reason, it is not a threatening sign."
