Description

Mountain Xpress and Sherwood's Music are partnering in a series of stripped-down performances for the web. This week, Chelsea Lynn LaBate, a.k.a Ten Cent Poetry, returns to perform another original song. LaBate took on the moniker Ten Cent Poetry after spending some formative years performing in New York City’s Lower East Side. While in NYC, LaBate would print copies of her drawings and poems with invitations to her shows written on the back. The printing costs ten cents — thus the moniker. LaBate now has four releases to her credit, the most recent being Picking Through the Pawn Shop from February 2011. All her releases, including Live in Brooklyn, Carboard Crowns and Lip to Lip, Dust to Chalkare available at CD Baby. LaBate is also vice president of Girls Rock Asheville (GRAVL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to “empowering girls, trans youth and ladies of all backgrounds and abilities through music education,” which is part of the national Girls Rock Camp Alliance. Mentors of GRAVL, including Bate, work to encourage positive identity development, musical experimentation, peer collaboration and DIY production. You can learn more about GRAVL on their Facebook page. Or, if you're watching this on it's premiere date (May 22) you can still hurry down The Hop location at 721 Haywood Road and support GRAVL by buying yourself a tasty treat. You can connect with Ten Cent Poetry at tencentpoetry.com or on Facebook. Check back each week for another performance showcasing local music!
