The court granted requests by the regulatory agency Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's food safety watchdog, to suspend the operation of two branches on Manezh Square, just outside the Kremlin, and on Prospekt Mira. The new suspensions bring the number of McDonald's restaurants closed nationwide in recent weeks to eight. Sanitary inspections reported the restaurants were not disposing of food and waste adequately, and that McDonald's salads were found to contain E.coli bacteria, which can cause stomach cramps and diarrhoea. McDonald's employs over 35,000 people in more than 430 restaurants worldwide. The fast food company has repeatedly been criticised over sanitary violations, as well as human and animal rights issues.
