The strike means more than 2,100 flights have been cancelled. The strike began at 1 p.m. local time (1100 GMT) Monday, and is expected to last until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday (2159 GMT). Mainly affecting short and medium-haul European flights, it has also been announced that long-haul pilots on intercontinental flights to North America, Asia and other destinations will strike at 6 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) on Tuesday until 11:59 p.m. (2159 GMT) the same day. Members of Vereinigung Cockpit have been protesting a new wage contract with a higher retirement age. Lufthansa pilots can currently retire at 55 years old. The Lufthansa pilots' strike comes on the heels of a weekend rail strike that disrupted train travel across Germany, with only about one-third of passenger trains running.
