This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Rachel and Rotem discuss with us the six "ingredients” of Yeruham’s magic recipe for meaningful learning that ignites passion and enthusiasm in students. They demonstrate how robotics activities can start at kindergarten age and fill any child with curiosity and towards choosing a scientific career. Increasing interest in robotics has transformed the small peripheral town of Yeruham into a “Robotics Empire” with 30% of the kids studying robotics. Dr. Rachel Knoll Rachel is a physics teacher and educational entrepreneur. She has a Ph.D. in physics and a B.A. in musicology. She is the director and co-founder of the Yeruham Science Center, of which the robotics program is a dominant part. Rachel believes that it is possible to “beat the statistics” with hard work, persistence, and a strong belief in human potential. Rotem Stahl Rotem Stahl is 18 years old. She became interested in robotics in 9th grade – and fell in love with it as a member of a FLL (First LEGO League) team. During her high school years, Rotem was a member of the FRC (First Robotics Competition) team of Yeruham – each year taking on more and more responsibilities. She was the head of the media-community sub-team, and in her senior year she was captain of the robotics team, "The Y Team". Now she manages the robotics department in the Science Center of Yeruham. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
