Description

Thank you for checking out The Public Art Project Naija 2013. Follow us on tumblr for info about our program and The UR4Africa Project -- a collective of artists, educators, and activists from Nigeria and abroad creating positive images and stories about African people! http://publicartproject2013naija.tumblr.com/ Thank you! The Public Art Project Team -- "Today in Nigeria, young people are rarely given a platform to express their own ideas, thoughts and opinions about the state of the country and their generation. Young people need a space to express themselves so that they can be moved to positive action concerning the issues they feel strongly about." The Public Art Project is a youth media project working in partnership with a community-based organization, local Nigerian artists, The Inheritance Process and The UR4Africa Project. Our solution is to develop a series of art projects and workshops that empower young people by providing them with art and design skills, know-your-rights training and access to community-based projects that will encourage them to be positive, proactive influences in their communities. The final, concrete aspect of this project is a mural created in collaboration with the young people, community members, and facilitating artists. The mural creates a space for the youth to publicly articulate their perspective on both the challenges and positive potential of their generation. The Public Art Project encourages artistic creativity, care for community, collaboration and self empowerment. We will be working with young people from both private and public schools. This cross-class collaboration is rare in Nigeria. Students will create three projects with artists from both the US and Nigeria, while also being exposed to workshops encouraging community service, civic engagement and leadership. In addition, these projects and this process will be documented and shared via the web to close the gap between young Africans and the rest of the world. The project’s young people will have an opportunity to communicate and share their stories with young people doing similar work in different parts of the world.
