Description

October 22, 2014 - NAZ Today reports that Navajo Presidential Candidate Chris Deschene has lost his bid in the election. The Navajo Supreme Court upheld a lower court's ruling that Deschene is unqualified to run for the position due to his lack of fluency in the Navajo language. Tribal law requires candidates to have complete mastery of the the Navajo language. A subject of controversy for some time now, the ruling is a result of law suits filed against Deschene by Hank Whitethorn and Dale Tsosie, two other presidential candidates. Whitehorn and Tsosie filed the law suits after Deschene refused to take a language fluency test. The office of hearings and appeals had no choice but to uphold the supreme court's ruling and remove Deschene's name from the ballot after he failed to include a copy of his disqualification order in his appeal.
