Description

Andrew is a physicist trying to unravel the fundamental mechanisms which make materials behave in the way that they do. His PhD research investigated magnetism and superconductivity, by firing tiny particles called muons into these materials at a Swiss particle accelerator one thousand times smaller than the LHC. Andrew also loves talking about science; he won FameLab UK 2012 with a talk on the quantum mechanics behind the colour of carrots, and he has explained physics on television, radio and online. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
