Description

The late comedian Robin Williams and the Elgin (Parthenon) Marbles at the British Museum in London, England. CelebrateGreece.com visits with Director Shawn Levy who comments, along with Actor Owen Wilson, on working with the academy-awarding winning actor and comedian in his last live action movie, Night at the Museum 3, Secret of the Tomb. In our behind the scenes footage Robin Williams visits the Parthenon Marbles in the British Museum and entertains the movie crew as only he could. The crown jewels of the museum, the Parthenon Marbles were removed from the Parthenon in 1804 by Lord Elgin and brought to England. At that time Greece was under Ottoman Turkish rule. However, the marbles, which constitute the sculptures surrounding and adorning the frieze, metopes and pediments of the Parthenon atop the acropolis in Athens, Greece are attributed to the greatest Greek sculpture Phidias. 2000 years later Michelangelo would comment on the talents of Greek sculptors, "They knew more than nature." Ever since Greece gained independence beginning in 1825, the marbles have been a bone of contention between Britain and Greece, who wishes the repatriation of the marbles back to Athens to be placed in the new Acropolis Museum. Recently, Amal Clooney (Mrs. George Clooney) began helping Greece to negotiate with England and the British Museum.
