Description

EUROPE'S SHARED RESPONSIBILITY The RSPO has achieved much over the past ten years, membership has reached 1400 entities and RSPO certified growers now account for 16% of the world wide palm oil production. And yet NGOs, scientists and local communities continue to issue alarming reports about forest and biodiversity loss and social conflicts in areas where palm oil is grown. Much more needs to be done in the market as only 52% of sustainable palm oil is bought, and increasing market demand is critical to drive up production of sustainable palm oil by the growers. Europe is leading this global market transformation and the RSPO is working to launch a new dialogue with the supply chain in Europe on the theme "100% CSPO: Our shared responsibility". 2014 presents a great opportunity to turn the page on palm oil: more and more European companies are publicly announcing their commitment to source only certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO); more and more European industries are getting together to form national alliances to commit to use 100% CSPO, in the Netherlands, Belgium, UK, France, Germany and Sweden. More will happen soon. In December 2014 new EU food labelling rules mean that palm oil will appear on the packs of all food products and 500 million European consumers will find out about it.
