60 Years Of Illegal Segregation Ends In Mississippi School District

Description

On Friday a federal court ordered the Cleveland, Mississippi school district to consolidate its schools entirely. The Court ruled that after six decades of resistance to the US supreme court ruling that ordered schools to integrate, only dismantling and reforming the schools could bring the town’s two sides together. The US district court for the northern district of Mississippi wrote: “The delay in desegregation has deprived generations of students of the constitutionally guaranteed right of an integrated education. Although no court order can right these wrongs, it is the duty of the District to ensure that not one more student suffers under this burden.” The population of 12,000 is split east and west by the old Illinois railroad tracks. Residents on the east side are black, and attend East Side high school. The west is white. Students attend Cleveland high. The school district had come up with two plans of its own to mix the students. US judge Debra Brown, however, rejected them as unconstitutional. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/may/17/mississippi-cleveland-high-schools-segregated http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
