Description

Increasing numbers of surgical procedures can now be performed in a minimally-invasive way. In this half-hour interview, Dr. Patricia Turner, a general surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center, discusses the history and evolution of laparoscopic surgery, which has many advantages for patients, such less pain, a faster recovery and a smaller scar. Common types of surgery that can now be done in a minimally invasive way include gallbladder removal, surgery for reflux (GERD -- gastroesphogeal reflux disease), hernia repairs, appendectomy, colon surgery, bariatric (gastric bypass) surgery, kidney removal, cancer surgery, lung surgery, heart bypass and valve repairs, kidney stone treatment and gynecological surgery. In the second half of the program, Dr. Turner also discusses minimally invasive techniques for treating endocrine disorders including problems with the thyroid and parathyroid glands. And she talks about specialized laparoscopic surgery training. University of Maryland Medical System
