Description

Erskine Bowles has split his life between the public and private sectors of the economy. He began his business career as a corporate finance associate at Morgan Stanley. He later went on to found and lead Bowles, Hollowell, Conner which became the preeminent investment bank focused on middle market mergers and acquisitions. He subsequently co-founded the middle- market private equity firm Carousel Capital, served as a Senior Advisor for Credit Suisse First Boston, and as a Partner with the global buyout firm Forstmann Little. Today he is a Vice-Chairman and Senior Advisor at BDT Capital and serves on the Boards of Morgan Stanley, Facebook, Norfolk & Southern, and Belk. He previously served on the boards of GM, Merck, and Cousins Properties. In his public sector career, Bowles served in the Clinton Administration as SBA Administrator, Deputy White House Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff. During his time in the White House, Bowles negotiated the first balanced budget in a generation. Bowles has also served as Deputy Special Envoy, with the rank of Undersecretary General, at the UN. Bowles' focus at the UN was coordinating the global response to the 13 countries devastated by the Tsunami in 2004. Upon his return to the United States, Bowles was elected President of the University of North Carolina. The University has 17 campuses, 220,000 students, and an annual budget of approximately $8 billion. In the not-for-profit arena, Mr. Bowles has, among other things, served as National President of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Vice Chairman of Carolinas Medical System, and a Trustee of the Duke Endowment. Mr. Bowles has been married for 41 years to his wife Crandall, who is the former Chairman and CEO of Springs Industries. They have 3 adult children and 9 grandchildren.
