Description

Jailed opposition politicians in the Phillipines have spoken out about the difficulties of fighting an election campaign against President Marcos, from their prison cells. Mrs Cory Aquino, wife of the jailed opposition leader Benigno Aquino, says her husband is under electronic surveillance even when he meets with his lawyers and former senator Jovito Salonga reads a letter signed by eight detained candidates. In it they accuse President Ferdinand Marcos of being afraid to release them for the election. They say the elections are a sham. "Marcos will 'win' his election," said Mr Salonga, "but he has just as surely lost the Filipino people." Marcos, who rules under martial law and his national security council have refused to release opposition detainees during the elections.
