Description

Outline Mercury is the innermost planet in the Solar System. It is also the smallest, and its orbit is the most eccentric of the eight planets. It orbits the Sun once in about 88 Earth days, completing three rotations about its axis for every two orbits. The planet is named after the Roman god Mercury, the messenger to the gods. Mercury is one of four terrestrial planets in the Solar System, and is a rocky body like the Earth. It is the smallest planet but it is more massive. Mercury consists of approximately 70% metallic and 30% silicate material. Mercury's core has a higher iron content than that of any other major planet in the Solar System. Mercury's surface is very similar in appearance to that of the Moon. The surface temperature of Mercury ranges from 100 K to 700 K. Mercury has a significant, and apparently global, magnetic field. According to measurements taken by Mariner 10, it is about 1.1% as strong as the Earth's. Mercury has the most eccentric orbit of all the planets; its eccentricity is 0.21 with its distance from the Sun. There is no natural satellite for mercury and also mercury does not have any human made satellite, because Mercury is closest to the sun. Mercury is made up of three main layers. The crust, the mantle and the large iron core. Planet - A celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. Mercury- Mercury is the innermost planet in the Solar System. It is also the smallest, and its orbit is the most eccentric of the eight planets. It orbits the Sun once in about 88 Earth days, completing three rotations about its axis for every two orbits. _________________________________________________________________________ vocabulary words Innermost- Something that closest to the center. Solar system - The collection of planets and their moons in orbit around a sun, together with smaller bodies such as asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. Eccentric Orbit- Orbits of celestial bodies that deviate markedly from a circle. Distance- the amount of length or how far is something. Revolves- Move in a circular orbit around. Terrestrial Planet- a planet having a compact rocky surface like the Earth's; the four innermost planets in the solar system. Roman mythology- the mythology of the ancient Romans. Satellites- An artificial body placed in orbit around the earth or another planet in order to collect information or for communication. Temperature- The degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object. Crust- The outer skin of the planet is composed of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock. Mantle- highly pressurized and very hot rocks. Large iron core- The large iron core provides a controlled path for the magnetic flux generated in the transformer by the current flowing through the windings. Global magnetic field- A region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts. Atmosphere- The envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet part of the sun's energy is absorbed by the earth's atmosphere. Elliptical- the shape of egg. This is basically an oval shape.
