The system seen here is a fine example of their work. It helped an end user significantly reduce their cycle times and the overall cost to produce each part. The system utilizes a FANUC M-20iA robot to control and drive an automated valve body inspection process. The end user required a system that would focus on foremost quality; the first process in the system does just that. After the FANUC M-20iA robot picks a part directly from the parts washer, it places it into a custom-built inspection machine that checks over 100 features in a matter of seconds. Speed was also essential for the end user, as they required a system that could process one part in under 28 seconds. The robot picks the part and places it into a station where a high production laser engraver marks the part with production-specific information. For further assurance of part quality, a vision system inspects and grades the quality of every part mark. Finally, the FANUC robot picks the valve body and places it on an outfeed conveyor that carries parts out of the cell for final inspection and packaging. This automated inspection process, driven by robotics from FANUC America, was designed and built by Meredith Machinery to exceed the customers' expectations throughout. Meredith Machinery achieved the customer's goals by exceeding their target cycle time of less than 27 seconds -- inspecting one part in just 24 seconds. A gravity feed chute for failed part contaminant also ensures that bad parts are not shipped to the final customer. This dramatically increases the throughput of the inspection process. Finally, the end user's costs were decreased and profits were significantly increased through the use of this automated system.
