Description

The number of homeless people in Los Angeles County in the US state of California has jumped by nearly six percent over the past year. Authorities say around 47000 people are homeless partly due to a historic housing shortage. According to a report by The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the number of homeless people in the city is up by 11 percent while other areas in the county are seeing higher numbers. It added that over 34000 of the county's homeless are without shelter, which means they are living in tents, shantytowns or vehicles. The number of homeless veterans in LA is also going up every day. City officials say they are facing a staggering mental health crisis because of the issue. Earlier, we talked to Jack Rasmums, professor of political economy in San Francisco. He gave us his views on why the number of Americans who can afford housing keeps falling.
