"The organization started in 2011 after others began following the example Smith set in his role as a street outreach worker helping homeless and runaway teens," according to a 2012 StateFarm press release about Skate for Change. Skate for Change started as a means for helping people and giving back to the homeless in his community by giving the homeless food, water, and clothing. Now days, hundreds of people hit the streets with Mike to participate in Skate for Change. Also, Skate for Change is done in cities across the United States; Seattle, WA, Kansas City and Springfield, MO, Omaha and Lincoln, NE, and Chicago, IL. To help out the homeless in their community Mike and the skaters take food, water, and clothing to them once a week.
