Description

I was up a bit "late" on this longest day trip from GBSR. It was 6.40AM on 18 July. Most riders had already left camp. I felt particularly strong and had a very good pace right from the start. It still took me all morning to chase down the foremost riders of this day. There was a very rough 5km long stretch at the Latvian-Lithuanian border that I took with comparatively high speed. This got me a lot closer to these two who had not pushed the envelope at that point. When I finally got them, I was settling myself behind them and expected an easy ride for the rest of the day, but...... Jurgen felt like playing. So he slowly accelarated away from Andy and me to see how we responded. Andy seemed content with the current pace, but my heartrate was still up, so I accepted the challenge, accelerated towards Jurgen and taking over the lead. I felt good, so I really tested Jurgen right from the start. He matched my effort and we switched the leading position several times for additionial motivation. During 1hour10minutes we averaged 43,5km/h on the beautiful wide and good quality roads with very little traffic. My heart rate was very high, averaging 162bpm. The lunch stop in the walking area of Siauliai was very welcome, but even after that, Jurgen kept pushing and well..... of course I went along. The roads however were a bit more rough. No problem for my Mango, but what gave the light combination of Jurgen and Evo-S the edge was the hillier terrain and the hot sun. Temperature rose to 27degrC and with the wind from behind, the cooling effect of my ventilation hose was less than usual. I had to lower my speed so I would not overheat under the racing/touring hood, especially on the steeper climbs. Jurgen made camp 10 minutes before me and way ahead of all the other riders. 268km in 6h10m moving with only two stops for coffee and lunch. I celebrated my overall 37.4km/h average on 268km with beer for all riders. The campsite owner was so kind to get it from the store, so Jurgen and me could take a well-deserved shower. The campsite Honey Vally (http://www.medaus-slenis.lt/en/index.html) is really nice to stay at, close to the river Memel, with water ponds on the site and excellent facilities. http://ridewithgps.com/trips/3025338 for detailed fitness stats and the track.
