Description

Waikato hooker Warren Gatland jogs in to score against the British & Irish Lions during his sides' 38-10 thrashing of the touring side. Gatland was a mainstay of the Waikato team in the late 1980's and early 1990's and held at one point held the record for most appearances for the club. However despite playing 17 games for the All Blacks in tour matches, he never played a test match as Sean Fitzpatrick always held the hooker shirt ahead of him and Gatland holds the record for most times sat on the bench without actually getting on the pitch. Since retiring, Gatland has become one of the most well known coaches in world rugby. Notably coaching Wasps during a golden period for them between 2002 and 2005, and leading Wales to two Grand Slam titles and a World Cup semi final. He also was given the honour of coaching the side he scored against in this clip the British & Irish Lions in 2009 and in 2013 was the head coach. Gatland played in the same Waikato team as another player who has become a well known coach, former All Black coach John Mitchell.
