Hello, fellow YouTubers. This uploaded video is the very first episode of "Late Night with David Letterman." The year is 1979 and David Letterman is hosting a banquet honoring then-NBC President Fred Silverman, who at the time was trying to give the peacock what he did at CBS and ABC: create hits. Fred Silverman and other NBC suits really liked David Letterman and his offbeat and dry humor, which led to his very first talker, "The David Letterman Show" in 1980. The show had a very innovative premise, but the problem was it aired in the morning, which back in those days, many of the morning viewers were housewives and the elderly--two groups who wouldn't be into Letterman's humor, except for Tina Fey's mother. That's not a joke. Tina Fey said her mother found Letterman as "an American treasure." David Letterman's earliest talker lasted only six months due to low ratings. NBC would later redo his morning show to make it the following program to Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Fred Silverman said in a book, "I'd really never did like Tom Snyder," who hosted "Tomorrow," the program that "Late Night" replaced. Tom Snyder once called Letterman a "nobody" to one of Letterman's friends backstage when he was sitting in for his idol, Johnny Carson, on the "Tonight Show." Little did Snyder know, this nobody was going to replace him in 1982. "Late Night with David Letterman" premiered on NBC on February 1, 1982. The show mocked the talk show format and did things that set the tone for the talk show format we know today. Letterman's talk shows differed from talk shows of his heroes Steve Allen, Jack Paar, and Johnny Carson in ways of skits, gags, segments, delivery, timing, and interviews. As said by my fellow Letterman fan Jimmy Kimmel, "He (Letterman) did things which made Carson look corny." Judd Apatow once said he'd fall asleep in class from watching Letterman the previous night. Many people fell in love and watched the late night antics of David Letterman from when he started in 1982 until his retirement in 2015. Now Letterman episodes from NBC and CBS are here on YouTube to enjoy. Thanks for watching. I OWN NOTHING!!!!!!!!! "Late Night" and "Late Night with David Letterman" are copyrighted works of NBC.
