Description

This video consists of two excerpts from the 1957 television broadcast of the Royal Ballet's 'Cinderella' where Sir Frederick Ashton and Sir Kenneth MacMillan, as the Ugly Sisters, dress up and practise dancing for the ball, and then arrive at the ball and dance competitively for two suitors' attentions. The Jester is the pyrotechnic Alexander Grant. What's interesting to me is Ashton's early conception of his Ugly Sister - a character which became, over the years, more complex - less the one dimensional music hall panto dame and more the gentle, sweet and wistfully and whimsically sad. And it's also interesting to see MacMillan on stage, all be it in a mime role. Sadly the quality of the footage I've managed to achieve here is not the greatest - it's a something's better than nothing scenario. Enjoy!
