A WRONG CONCEPT OF ICONS Icons and iconography are NOT: + A product of a mystical or hesychast spiritual experience, designed to induce such an experience in the beholder (as opposed to "mere art") + An ontological absolute, whose meaning is intrinsic because of what they are (i.e. "icons" and not "mere art"); their message is not "objective" + Solely dictated -- if they are "true" -- by Wisdom imparted by the Spirit + Products of a rigidly controlled system of rules, and especially not reduced to mere slavish ...
