The Designing Women Reunion (2003)

Description

Unavailable on DVD, this is the first and last time that all of the main principal/recurring cast members from the first 5 seasons of “Designing Women” were reunited (on 4 June 2003). Also included is a secondary reunion (minus Jean Smart) a month later on “The View” to promote the debut broadcast. More below. Unfortunately, what could have been a 3 hour special was whittled down to 66 minutes to air in a 90 min timeslot; the taping actually went on for hours and HOURS - I know cuz was in attendance (thankfully I gave my original seat in front of Hal Holbrook to a pregnant fan, so I'm barely glimpsed). The reason that the ladies rush into the audience to greet Alice Ghostley and we barely see her standing is because Ghostley was physically in very poor condition and had to be helped to the stage - ironically, by the “black man” seen holding her arm. That alone took ten minutes, so it's unsurprising that this was her final TV appearance. The segment on “when Delta was crazy” dragged on much longer, the cast shared more stories, and the cast/audience viewed more clips from the show (with many audience members reciting the dialogue along with the actors on-screen - just like the guys in the gay bar featured in the special). After the main taping, the cast remained for a photo shoot and to film promos (like Smart's bumper which is tagged on at the end) and then the male cast members, critics and writers shot their interviews. It's a travesty that they didn't compile a longer edit of this and issue it as a DVD extra -- hell, even THIS version would've been nice. With the passing of Ghostley and Carter a few years ago and Taylor this year, it's WAY past time for this great reunion special to be seen again. Clearly, no infringement is intended; I've shared this on You Tube as a courtesy to other fans.
