Description
THE ELECTRONIC RIFF is lifted from a long forgotten 1980s UK POP SONG. The MELODY is somewhat original, if not EUROPEAN STYLE. The WORDS are CONSPIRATORIAL about suspicious actions and secrets to be passed on. The VISUALS are the last days of INDIAN INDIA HINDI CINEMA before the 'Bollywood' tag blanded and bleached the 'Indian' part of the Indian film. The SURPRISING THING is that such a Western-Looking NIGHTCLUB SONG was still 'INDIAN' at this pre-'Bollywood' time? Curious NATIONALISM that was slowly fading away in the mid-1980s but still shining and talented in this exciting ELECTRONIC DANCE SONG. DISCO SONGS in INDIAN CINEMA 'Aap Jaise Koi' in 1978 'Qurbani' ['Sacrifice'] film sung by London Pakistani Singer NAZIA HASSAN dubbed onto the lovely actress ZEENAT AMAN was the first attempt at 'The Hindi Disco Song'. It was such a success and robustly written song by London Asian Writer BIDDU [also wrong 'Kung Fu Fighting'] that it will never be forgotten and has been remixed many times. 'Aap Jaise Koi' set a trend for some thrilling and experimental INDIAN FILM DISCO SONGS between 1978 to 1986 before the change to 'Bollywood' which rendered everything into bland foreign global medium that lost the thrilling sound and Indian Style. WHAT CHARCTERISES THE HINDI DISCO SONG? ROCK & ROLL Hindi songs had been around since the 60s with 'Aaj Aa' ['Come Today'] from TEESRI MANZIL in 1966. These were nightclub songs with dance bands and pop dancing. This moved to CABARET songs of the 70s with actresses like HELEN and BINDU shaking around to HAMMOND ORGANS in feathers and sequins. The DISCO SONG was a sort of synthesis of CABARET and WESTERN DISCO and a degree of IMPROVISATION based upon not actually knowing the DISCO medium that well or being able to replicate the DISCO DANCES that well as the native INDIAN tends to move in BHANGRA or BHARATANATYAM [classical Hindu statue dance] way! The sheer EXPERIMENTAL style of the HINDI DISCO SONGS of those few years produced some amazing songs that are really THRILLING to watch. EXAMPLES of HINDI DISCO GENRE: 'DIL RUBA' ['Hearts Desire'] provokative and skillfully edited DISCO song mixed with BELLY DANCE and CABARET by the lovely KALPANA IYER: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdCvdw9rZGI&feature=plcp 'PYAR MAIN JEENA' ['In Love I Live'] is a UNIQUE roaring DISCOTHEQUE HINDI FILM SONG with dancing girls playing guitars and sax and KALPANA IYER in a mini-dress and geometric wig with the voice of USHA UTTHUP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwYl6QEQ-a4&feature=plcp 'YUDH KAR' ['Take a Sip'] DISCO SONG from 'YUDH' This song is interesting because it uses all ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS except for a WESTERN FLUTE SOLO which does refresh the listener a little. The use of SEQUENCERS and KEYBOARDS was quite advanced for India at the time and quite EXPERIMENTAL. The usual PLAYBACK SINGERS [professional singers who can sing in a CINEMA fashion who create backing tapes for actors with average voices to mime to on screen] were replaced here with a couple of new voices. Both of the singers were new and of BENGALI origin. This is interesting as the style of the BENGAL singer is slightly different. The male voice for actor JACKIE SHROFF to mime to is AMIT KUMAR. AMIT went on to record a few more films before fading away. He is complemented in the song by ALKA YAGNIK who sings for actress TINA MUNIM. YAGNIK went on to sing up to the present day in 'Bollywood' films with the lighter singing style that is preferred by the Youth of today. Yet in this 'YUDH KAR' song, both singers perform with booming and intense vocals that work so well with the song as they cut through the ELECTRONIC TEXTURE with ELECTRICALLY EFFECTED voices. The vocals work really well against the SEQUENCED backdrop and are very DRAMATIC and EXCITING in their powerfulness. This works well with the VISUALS of the large built stage set that the track is mimed. They EYE sees a big echoing space and the EAR hears [electronically!] echoing voices....
