Description

CAIR-FL: Criminal charges filed against Israeli officer involved in Tampa teen Tariq AbuKhdeir (Tampa, FL 09/10/2014) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations Florida (CAIR Florida) is monitoring the recent decision by the Israeli Justice Ministry to charge the officer that violently beat the American teenager Tariq Khdeir. The ministry said Wednesday a police investigation concluded that "evidence was found supporting the guilt of the police officer suspected of severe violent crimes." CAIR-FL executive director and attorney for the family, Hassan Shibly, issued the following statement: "These criminal charges are long overdue and we are troubled that the other officers involved in the beating have yet to face any form of justice. We are also troubled that many of Tariq's relatives continue to be incarcerated by Israeli police without charges in apparent retaliation for the publicity the Khdeir case generated. We will continue to monitor the situation and explore all options to seek justice for Tariq and the Khdeir family, and pray that the thousands of Palestinian civilians killed by the Israeli military and the 3 Israeli civilians killed by Hamas also get justice and their killers likewise held accountable before a court of law." During the briefing Tariq Khdeir will testify and recount the chain of events leading to his brutal beating and what happened after he regained consciousness. This briefing will examine whether Israel complies with U.S. laws, such as the Arms Export Control Act and Foreign Assistance Act, and international law in its use of force against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank, which includes East Jerusalem. CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. - END - CONTACT: CAIR Florida Chief Executive Director Hassan Shibly, 813-541-4321, hshibly@cair.com Government Affairs Manager Robert McCaw, 202-999-8292, rmccaw@cair.com; CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, 202-744-7726, ihooper@cair.com
