Description

"Twist And Shout" was #2 on Billboard when the Fab Four made history and held the Top 5 positions of the Hot 100 on the week ending April 4, 1964. However, on Cash Box, it soared to #1 that same week, again with The Beatles firmly embedded in the Top 5. The reason I give the year as 1963 after the title is, in part, because of how much earlier the song was actually recorded and charted in the UK. "Twist And Shout" was recorded in one take (Lennon's voice was on the verge of giving out due to a harsh cold) on February 11, 1963 ... back during a time when the #1 hit single in the United States was "Hey Paula" by Paul & Paula. It was never released as a single in the UK, but instead as the title track of an EP with three other Beatles songs on July 12, 1963, after which the EP quickly sailed to #1. The two film footages I synced the track to were also recorded in 1963: the official video (shot in black and white) and the live concert (shot in color) at the ABC Cinema in Arwick, Manchester on November 20, 1963. I have retained various portions of the live track to hear along with the original recording wherever both are in the same key (you might notice a slight echo effect on John Lennon's vocal about half a minute after the live track blends in to replace the official video). I reformatted both performances to HD widescreen as best as I could.
