My role is the portfolio leaf for LGBT and today I am going to talk to you about homophobic and biphobic hate crime. Homophobic and biphobic hate rime is when people are targets because of their sexual orientation. It covers lesbian gay and bisexual people but also their family friends associates and people who are perceived rightly or wrongly to be lesbian gay or bisexual. Scottish government suggests that 1 in 10 people living in Scotland identify a being lesbian gay or bisexual. In one year 2014-2015 Police Scotland received 6686 reports of hate crimes. Over 1,000 of those a bit over 15% of the incidents referred to hate crimes where people were targeted because of their sexual orientation. We believe that homophobia and hate crime related to sexual orientation is still under reported and this means that there are lots of people being targeted but not reporting to police. You should report any hate crime whether you are a witness or the victim so that we can help support those people, bring the offenders to justice and to stop it happening more. If you are targeted because of who you are REPORT IT. if you know someone is being targeted REPORT IT. Scotland no place for prejudice.
