Description

A video in two parts - 1. Interview & demonstration with Aaron Minsky about how his earlier published pieces (and experiments with his band Von Cello) set the stage for his cello concerto - The Conqueror. 2. Aaron Minsky performs The Conqueror with the Staten Island Philharmonic, Alex Guzman conductor. Composed during Hurricane Sandy and inspired by its terrible might, the concerto is loosely based on the life of Genghis Khan. A controversial figure, Khan is viewed negatively in the West but is a hero in Mongolia because he united the tribes and brought them into peaceful coexistence. The concerto incorporates elements of Aaron's celtar (rock cello) style which he pioneered with his band Von Cello. Ultimately, The Conqueror is a journey from dread to determination to exhilaration and triumph! Some of the movie footage used in this video comes from the movie "Mongol". Other footage comes from video of Mongolian television broadcasts available on You Tube. The images come courtesy of Google Images.
