Harmony: I ride in your flags and ride in your Bible. I heard the money singing. This song is intended as a contemporary response to Rev. Edward Clayborn's song I Heard the Angels Singing, later popularized by Rev. Gary Davis. Clayborn himself is playing the slide guitar accompaniment in the background. Rather than hearing the angles singing, the narrator hears the money singing. This personification is based on an extension of Joshua Nazereth claiming "you cannot serve both God and mammon". Mammon was synonymous with wealth, both as the wealth deity and as an abstract personification. Of course, here in America those people who are as radical as Jesus...radical enough to say that one must view wealth as an inherently psychologically negative thing to be actively avoided...are few and far between. Money has come to move through us and partake to one degree or another in almost every decision we make on both micro and macro levels. I don't have some easy answer for this problem; I certainly grapple with the implications of money all the time and have no plans to drain what little I have in my accounts for fear that their contents will corrupt me. But I thought it was about time we people who are driven and arrogant enough to create art use our efforts to bring this situation up for discussion. Thanks for listening.
