Description

'This Land Is Ours' was a 1942 propaganda film produced by the Government Film Studios Wellington (also known as the National Film Unit). It depicts how good life was in New Zealand, showing New Zealanders at work and play, and how that was threatened by the aggressive militant forces unleashed in other parts of the world. Images of war and destruction are used to highlight the need for New Zealand to arm and prepare to fight the 'forces of evil' destroying lives and homes across Europe and in the Pacific. The film includes iconic images of scenic landscapes, leisure activities, and thriving agriculture in 1942 New Zealand, as well as scenes of war. The National Film Unit (NFU) was established to publicise New Zealand's participation and achievements during the war. After WW2 the NFU expanded from producing weekly newsreels to making documentaries and films to the order of Government Departments. During its existence the NFU produced films for national organisations as well as many films on its own initiative. The private film industry in New Zealand relied heavily on the NFU's extensive film processing facilities. DV file from BetaSP telecine of 35mm film.
