Description

Monday April 21, 2014: Bent TV Report on the Ex-Gay Movement Host: Dean Beck Guest: Nathan Despott This week, we look into The Ex-Gay Movement. Ex-gay therapies operate throughout the world and aim to convert homosexuals into heterosexuals, sadly leaving a trail of suicides and broken relationships in its wake. With the recent shutdown of large ex-gay organisations like Exodus International and Living Waters Australia, you'd think the evangelical gay-to-straight movement was on its last legs. The movement has attracted increased media attention through documentaries, radio shows, social media and news media. When a former ex-gay participant - Melbourne man Damien Christie - took his life in 2013, members of Melbourne's growing gay Christian community decided to shine the light on the ex-gay movement in Melbourne. Ex-Gay therapy survivor Nathan, describes his growing up, sexuality, spirituality, being a gay Christian, his motivation to undertake religious education, how he became aware of the existence of ex-gay therapies, his participation, its failure and personal destructive affect, what lead him to eventually 'vomit it up' [ex-gay therapies] as he terms it, and his challenging of the core beliefs upon which the ex-gay movement is based.
