Description

"It's a film of courage." Artists Reflect on ELENA. (Subtitles by Robin Geld.) Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Petra Costa, ELENA was the most-watched documentary of 2013 in Brazil. From executive producers Tim Robbins and Fernando Meirelles (director, City of God), American audiences can see the award-winning film in U.S. theaters starting on May 16, 2014. Elena, a young Brazilian woman, moves to New York with the same dream as her mother: to become a movie actress. In doing so, she leaves behind her childhood spent in hiding during the years of the military dictatorship. She also leaves Petra, her seven-year-old sister. But in New York, as she pursues her dreams, tragedy befalls Elena. Two decades later, Petra also becomes an actress and goes to New York in search of Elena. She only has a few clues about her sister: home movies, newspaper clippings, a diary and letters. ELENA is a film about the persistence of those memories, the irreversibility of that loss, and the impact the absence of her sister had on the seven-year-old girl. Intimate in style, ELENA delves into the abyss of one family's drama, revealing the poetry that emerges from the greatest of losses.
