Description

Hi this is Scott Parman, welcome to Ask a Pro. I'm here today at the home of Canyon Stone in Olathe, KS. It's a great local business that provides manufactured stone for homeowners and builders all around the country. Wylie Saulsbury and Jason Cohorst started Canyon Stone right here in the Kansas City area about 15 years ago, and it's grown a lot bigger than that. Wylie's here right now to talk to us a little bit about their product and let us know, Wylie, what is manufactured stone? Manufactured stone is a simulated natural stone that we actually manufacture right here in olathe. It's basically a lightweight aggregate mixed with a cement base that produces a stone that is capable of being put on homes barbecue grills fireplaces, etc. There's a lot of uses for the product. Ok, so we see it a lot of time when we're driving by neighborhoods, on the fronts of houses, correct? Where else could we put it to increase our home value, or just to make things look better. Just recently, designers and builders have been adding stone in areas you might not expect. Kitchen walls, living room accent walls, fireplaces are a popular spot. A lot of different areas you can accent with the stone and it adds a whole different flavor to the house. So, backsplashes, bathrooms, etc.? Yeah, just about anywhere you have a vertical wall you can apply this product. What kind of options are there for the different stone? Just one type, or many? We have a variety of different styles, some with grout joints, some with a "dry lay." There are also mortar options, colored mortars...the options are endless for the product. Is it a customizable product? Yes, it can be custom colored for large runs or large projects. Obviously, we can't do it just for a fireplace, but for an entire home, it can be worth it to get the look you want. This product is amazing, but is this all you do here at Canyon Stone? Actually, we offer full masonry services. We build outdoor kitchens, outdoor living spaces, which includes cinder block construction. We do firepits, flagstone patios...there's a lot of versatility in what we're capable of doing. We can do just about anything masonry. One thing I really like to focus on here with Ask a Pro is the local businesses and what they do for the community. Just curious, in 15 years now, how many people do you employ here in teh Kansas City area. We started out with 4 of us, and we've expanded to over 100 and we're really proud of that. Wow, 100 people employed right here in our area. That's not the only place you guys have an impact now, is it? No, we sell our stone nationwide and we also have a plant in Raleigh, North Carolina. They employ around 50 people. They're growing like crazy. We ship our stone all over the country and even up into Canada, in Toronto. One of the big things people are concerned about now is green building, I know you've taken some initiatives, additional steps to make sure you're more green than other products, right? Sure, the chemicals we used in the product to sustain against UV rays and enhance the longevity of the product are all eco-friendly--we don't use any harsh chemicals. We also buy all of our materials within a 30 mile radius. Technically, to be certified "green" it's supposed to be under a 500 mile radius, but we choose to get all ours local. Wylie, thanks for taking some time. Folks, you can see, there's a ton you can do with the product to make your house look great.
