DC Report - Defense Bill Addresses Post-Benghazi Concerns #N3

4h ago
SOURCE

Description

While the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee continues its investigation of last year's lethal attack on the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, other congressional committees are addressing security issues that contributed to that tragedy. The House Armed Services Committee is drafting an amendment to the fiscal 2014 defense authorization bill that would require better coordination between the Pentagon and the State Department regarding embassy security. One key congressional aide told Roll Call that the State Department's current defense model is a "burn-down" plan, in which consulate security personnel are instructed to buy time for the destruction of sensitive documents and protect key officials from harm long enough for help to arrive.
