Description
Nicholas Crace has become the UK's oldest living kidney donor to give a kidney to a total stranger at the age of 83. Crace, a former charity director, from Overton, Hampshire said he hoped he can improve someone else's life. "I'd become aware of the, how miserable it is to be on dialysis. You have to go to hospital four times a week for a number of hours. Apart from that you're restricted by diet, the amount of fluids you can take it, can't travel, can't go on holidays and you feel ill most of the time. And by giving these people a kidney you can transform their lives. And most of us have two kidneys, we could well spare one of them, most of us. And it's no great deal, I was only in hospital three days. And feeling fine." Despite his old age, Crace said he has not been concerned about risking his own life, with the the benefit of helping another person outweighing it. "The risk of death is one in three thousand which is less than having a hip transplant. And people don't blanch at that. In any case the great Irishman [unintel] said life is an adventure, if you're not prepared to take risks you might as well jump in your coffin as fast as you can."
