4/20/13 San Jose, CA I've been a pretty big UFC fan and supporter for many years, and I was able to attend my first live UFC show. They'd come through to Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose in years past but for one reason or another never went to a show. When UFC announced they were returning to the bay area for UFC on FOX 7 I was excited and knew I had to get my tickets to be in the building. With a main event of Benson Henderson defending his UFC lightweight championship against Strikeforce champion, Gilbert Melendez, and a co-main event featuring one of my long time heavyweight favorite's, Frank Mir I was sold on the fights and level of talent. With the recent Strikeforce closure is been an exciting past few months of welcoming in the Strikeforce fighters into the UFC. Party started the afternoon before at the California Theatre and the weigh-ins. Weigh-ins are seemingly a no-big deal type of deal, but UFC turns it into an actual event opening it up to fans and press. Its the first REAL chance for most fans to see the fighters so close to their actual fight. Joe Rogan, Bruce Buffer and UFC Pres. Dana White were all there, and that really makes it feel special and official. If that wasn't cool enough they brought out the Fuel TV crew of Brian Stann and Dominick Cruz. The actual fights were awesome! Just about every fight had a KO finish which can make for a very exciting day of fights. My buddy Brian and I arrived at the HP Pavilion early in the afternoon to catch the prelim FX fights. Those were highlighted by exciting dominant performances and fights from both Joseph Benavidez and Chad Mendes. Main card highlights were watching Nate Diaz and Frank Mir fight. I'm a big fan of both and it was a privilege and pleasure to see both fight live, even in defeat. Main event kept the action going. The San Jose crowd was definitely in support of "El Niño" in his quest for UFC gold. Fight was great, extremely close. I scored it for Benson Henderson, but you'll hear the crowd's take on the decision. Great day. Thank you UFC, can't wait for the next show.
