Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo Crash During Test In Mojave One Pilot Killed and One Seriously Injured The twisted wreckage of Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic spaceship lies scattered across a desert landscape leaving one pilot dead and another seriously injured. The suborbital craft, called SpaceShipTwo, burst into flames and exploded during a test flight before plunging into the desert in California. Another pilot was left with “major injury” after the disaster, Virgin said. Eyewitnesses described how SpaceShipTwo exploded during the trial at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. Virgin said in on Twitter: “During the test, the vehicle suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of SpaceShipTwo. “We will work closely with relevant authorities to determine the cause of this accident and provide updates ASAP.” The company earlier reported an unspecified problem with the space tourism project tweeting that the craft had been flying under rocket power when it “experienced an in-flight anomaly”. A witness said the craft exploded in flight after ignition and crashed in the Mojave Desert. Fire and Highway Patrol officers were en route to the scene last night. SpaceShipTwo has been under development at the desert spaceport north east of Los Angeles. The craft is carried aloft by a specially designed jet and then released before igniting its rocket for a suborbital thrill ride into space and then a return to Earth as a glider. Virgin, the front runner in the space tourism industry, would not say what happened other than that it was working with authorities to determine the cause of the accident. More than 800 people have paid or put down deposits to fly on the spaceship, which is carried to an altitude of about 45,000 feet and released. The craft then fires its rocket motor to catapult it to about 62 miles (100 km) high, giving passengers a view of the planet set against the blackness of space and a few minutes of weightlessness. The spaceship is based on a prototype, called SpaceShipOne, which 10 years ago won the $10 million Ansari X Prize for the first privately developed manned spacecraft to fly in space. Friday’s test was to be the craft’s first powered test flight since January. In May, Virgin Galactic and spaceship developer Scaled Composites, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Corp, switched to an alternative plastic-type of fuel grain for the hybrid rocket motor. The accident is the second this week by a US space company.
