Description

Recorded June 7, 2013 Guests: San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe San Mateo County Presiding Judge Robert Foiles San Mateo County Sheriff Captain Tom Gallagher, Operations Division Topic: Realignment Revisited More than seventeen months ago, the State of California began shifting prison inmates to county jails, a cost-cutting measure called realignment. We talk with three leading law enforcement officials and get a report card on realignment – what’s working, and what’s not. The game is crime and punishment. The Game is on. For years, the state has faced a federal mandate that it reduce overcrowding in the prisons and Governor Jerry Brown’s answer was realignment – send nonviolent, non-sex offenders back to local jails, where they could be rehabilitated and return to their communities. We revisit this topic and get a report card on realignment from three San Mateo County law enforcement officials who have had to make realignment work: District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, Presiding Judge Robert Foiles and San Mateo County Sheriff Captain Tom Gallagher.
