FiberFlax is a perfect example of what self-production can make. FiberFlax borns as a reaction to the use of fiberglass in the furniture industry. It is is widely used for the making of chairs, shells for sofas and other furnishing items, but it's made out of many minerals that have to be extracted from many part of the world, trasported and processed with a high expenditure of energy.The project started with a question : "Is it possible to create a new composite material that can replace fiberglass and at the same time being as sustainable as possible?". FiberFlax is the answer to this question. After months of research on natural fiber and resins, I have developed a material based on the mechanical properties of woven flax and wool felt. They are combined with a special resin obtained from exhausted industrial oils and leftovers from the manufacturing of wood and paper. This material shown to be 2/3 more sustainable than fiberglass as flax is a plant that requires very few water to grow, while wool felt is obtained form the discard of the manufacturing of the wool. To make this material I have recreated in my studio a technique used in the automotive and aerospacial industry known as VART or Vaccum Assisted Resin Transfer. It uses vacuum to create a thin, resistent and light composite material.
