Matt Damon stars as a hapless romantic for his recently deceased wife, who decides to relocate himself and his two young kids to a depilated zoo that is on the verge of being permanently shut down. Scarlett Johansson co-stars as head zookeeper for the dying establishment alongside a mere handful of veteran employees who have chosen to stay, and potentially save their beloved animals. It's a role she delivers rather well, even if it unfortunately affords her zero opportunities to showcase her stunning beauty. In the immediate wake of his wife's death, Damon struggles to be a better father to his son, 14-year-old Colin Ford, while Johansson struggles to turn the animal habitats around in time for their summer opening. Directed by Cameron Crowe, this 123-minute dramedy takes a decidedly light-hearted approach to very serious themes, like death, family, love, and redemption. Ultimately, this unique blend works decently well: the heart-warming story, although a bit heavy-handed at times, rings true, while the story simultaneously provides some great laugh-out-loud moments as well. Although reduced to a smaller B-plot, Ford's budding relationship with young zoo-worker Elle Fanning, is a real gem to watch unfold, with the two teen actors nearly upstaging their veteran counterparts with some terrific, and emotional performances. Careful not to break rules, this is a traditionally filmed and edited motion picture that relies entirely on the interesting and captivating true-story at it's center to drive the viewer's interest. Luckily, this well-written screenplay is only occasionally corny and unbelievable - successfully hitting it's mark most of the time. This is a fun, family-friend film that will most certainly bring a smile to your face, especially in a last-minute scene between Damon and his children, retelling them the brave story of their parents first meeting, that perfectly encapsulates the moral of the ...
