Description

(WTAE) PITTSBURGH —A 15-month-old boy was killed and two women were wounded after shots were fired in the East Hills neighborhood on Tuesday evening. "We strongly encourage people to come forward with information. They can remain anonymous. This child and these two women are believed to not have been the intended targets of this senseless and tragic incident," Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard said. Police said the women and the toddler, Marcus White Jr., were at a picnic in the 2300 block of East Hills Drive when as many as three gunmen opened fire shortly after 7:30 p.m. A witness who did not want to be identified said she heard "a bunch of gunfire and seen people running toward my building. Then, I ran out the house and seen the baby laying there with the two women. I knew the baby was gone. It's terrible. It's a horrible thing to happen. I'm a great-grandmother, a grandmother, a mother, and it's sad." Police said the boy was pronounced dead at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. They said a 20-year-old woman was in critical condition with gunshot wounds in the back and chest, and a 19-year-old woman also underwent surgery and was in stable condition. The child's mother, Jameela Tyler, said the women who were wounded in the shooting are her sisters. White's family invited Channel 4 Action News' Andrew Del Greco into their home Wednesday to share photographs and memories of the young boy. "He was loved by everyone. He's going to be missed, really missed," said the toddler's grandmother, Evelyn Turner. The boy's other grandmother, Camille Smith, told Del Greco her family is still in shock. "There are no words. Whoever did this doesn't know what they did to our family, to our friends. They don't know what they did to us," said Smith. The family showed Del Greco a few of the boy's favorite toys and a new bike his family had only just assembled a few days ago. They remember him as a happy boy who was always smiling, and they pray investigators find his killer.
