Description

Over the last year, the Good Governance Institute has been working with Birmingham City Council and Tunstall to develop standards for how telecare should be delivered. It was agreed from the outset by all three organisations that the service user would be at the core of developing our standards, and we determined to involve service users in every aspect of our work. So far, we have spoken directly to more than 500 service users of the Birmingham Telecare Service (BTS), run focus groups for dozens more and visited the homes of those users who couldn’t make it to one of our group events. We’ve also enabled service users to share their experiences with other users via video, created a quarterly newsletter that is sent to every BTS user, and set up a group of expert users who meet every couple of months to look at key issues in the development of BTS. To celebrate the first anniversary of BTS, we at the Good Governance Institute were delighted to be asked to help create an event for the people who are most important to BTS – the people who use the service - and this film was made primarily at that event. We are delighted to have been part of ensuring that BTS’s first anniversary was marked with an event for the people who actually use the service. We cannot think of a better way to celebrate a user-led service than a party where almost fifty users got to find out more about the service on which they rely, and to develop a sense of community with other users. And we are happy to say that the cake was pretty good, too!
