Stevie Wonder "Part Time Lover" "Part Time Lover" video for the 1985 single by Stevie Wonder, from his album In Square Circle. Wonder was a pioneer when it came to making and recording music using electronics and computers. This is an early example of digital audio recording, which Wonder put together at his own Wonderland Studios.Blind since shortly after birth, Wonder signed with Motown's Tamla label at the age of eleven, and continues to perform and record for Motown to this day. Backing vocals and additional lead vocals by Luther Vandross (1951 - 2005). The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, R&B, dance and adult contemporary charts. Syreeta Wright, who was Wonder's wife at one time, from 1970 to 1972, sang backing vocals. She co-wrote Wonder's 1970 song "If You Really Love Me" and had her own Top 10 hit with her duet with Billy Preston, "With You I'm Born Again." The song's simultaneous chart success made him the first artist to score a number-one hit on four different Billboard charts. The song also reached number three on the UK singles chart. The song also featured R&B crooner Luther Vandross humming at the end of Stevie's verses and on backing vocals. Stevie Wonder earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1986, for the song. Wonder is noted in the liner notes of the 4-CD set "Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection Volume 2 1972-1992" as describing the music for the song as an ode to "You Can't Hurry Love" and "My World Is Empty Without You," both by The Supremes, former Motown label mates of Wonder. Wonder was presented the Gershwin Award for Lifetime Achievement by president Barack Obama. Wonder performed at the February 19, 2012 memorial service for Whitney Houston at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. He changed some of the lyrics of his song Ribbon in the Sky in dedication to Ms. Houston. On June 4, 2012, Wonder performed at the Jubilee Concert for HM Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations at a mass open air concert outside Buckingham Palace, London. Lyrics: Call up, ring once, hang up the phone To let me know you made it home Don't want nothing to be wrong with part-time lover If she's with me I'll blink the lights To let you know tonight's the night For me and you, my part-time lover We are undercover passion on the run Chasing love up against the sun We are strangers by day, lovers by night Knowing it's so wrong, but feeling so right If I'm with friends and we should meet Just pass me by, don't even speak Know the word's 'Discreet' when part-time lovers But if there's some emergency Have a male friend to ask for me So then she won't peek it's really you, my part-time lover We are undercover passion on the run Chasing love up against the sun We are strangers by day, lovers by night Knowing it's so wrong, but feeling so right Part-time lovers Part-time lovers We are undercover passion on the run, yeah Chasing love up against the sun We are strangers by day, lovers by night Knowing it's so wrong, feeling so right I got something that I must tell Last night someone rang our doorbell And it was not you, my part-time lover And then a man called our exchange But didn't want to leave his name I guess that two can play the game of part-time lovers You and me, part-time lovers but she and he, part-time lovers Part-time lovers Part-time lovers Part-time lovers
