W/S Gay Pride and Christopher Street Parade SCRIPT Germany: Fetish warm up for Europe's largest gay and lesbian festival Europe's largest lesbian and gay festival got underway in Berlin on Saturday, with thousands of people turning up for what is a warm-up event for the official Gay Pride and Christopher Street Parade day on June 22. Embodying a theme of 'Equal rights for the unequal', the 'Lesbian and Gay City Festival', also named Stadtfest, meaning 'funfair' in German, was stretched out over 25,000 square metres of space and located in the heart of Berlin's famous gay district Nollendorfplatz, Schoneberg. Now in its 21st year, the festival is a two-day event and prides itself on having free entry. Visitors have the chance to learn information on sexual health, gay-friendly events and politics. A range of fetish, leather, S&M booths and other stalls attracted people to take a look at various interpretations and expressions of sexuality. The event also featured 'festival worlds', including World of Aids, Film, Radio, Travel, Sport and Politics and Wellness and Health, allowing visitors to pick and choose their fields of interest. Berlin is world-renowned in the gay community for being gay-friendly and open minded to sexuality and fetish. Gay-orientated bars, pubs, nightclubs, boutiques, bookstores and restaurants are scattered across the city and the German capital was also the first place in the world to have a gay village and neighbourhood in the 1920s. A characteristic of the Berlin gay scene is also the range and enthusiasm for leather and darkroom bars. Christian, a visitor to the Lesbian and Gay City Festival put it simply, "Leather is a kind of fetish and I think that leather turns me on, so, I wear it".
