Description

My name is Dave Nevins and I have had diabetes for 36 years and I have a passion for adventure and for living a rather unique lifestyle. This lifestyle has seen me involved in bungee jumping, ultra running, kayaking, sky diving, base and rope jumping, cycling, caving, rock climbing, mountain biking, cycling, hiking, stand up paddling and snorkeling. I have a strong desire to encouragement and inspire through the activities that I am involved in. My accomplishments include: • Honored as a Medtronic Global Hero in 2012. • Last year also saw the publication of Boise Backcountry Adventures, which I co-authored. This project was completed after running over 1,000 miles while compiling data for the Boise trail book. • Reached the summit of Mt. Rainier (twice) • Cycled from Tucson, AZ to Yorktown, VA • Worked as a Bicycle Messenger • Rode the Cochise Classic Cycling Classic (175 miles) • BBAD (Border-to-Border Against Diabetes) Bicycle Tour: Arizona to Idaho • Ran the Peterson Ridge Ultra Marathon and 3 marathons • Member of a diabetes running team at the Canadian Death Race • Honorable mention for the original DESA Athletic Achievement Award • Member of Sitka Mountain Rescue • Received the Steve Reifunstuhl Award at the Sitka Health Summit • Received the Terry Lorts Award at the El Tour de Tucson Bicycle Race (outstanding rider with diabetes) • Finished in the top 8 and top 24 in the U.S.(in my age group) in the Pepsi Hotshot Basketball Competition If I am not doing my own adventures, then I enjoy planning unique adventures for others! Many of the events that I help organize are through No Limits, a diabetes adventure group that I helped create in 2004. No Limits is dedicated to promoting, educating and inspiring active, healthy lifestyles for people with diabetes. We also love to create opportunities for those with diabetes to experience new activities and events. Some of the events/activities that I have directed or assisted with: • Helped create an annual 10k/5k ocean swim in Sitka, Alaska (originally a No Limits event • Helped create the No Limits 'Dive for Diabetes' (sky dive fund raiser) • Crew member for the Race Across America (1 year with Team Type 1 and 2 years with Team Type 2). This will be my 5th year involved with the Race Across America. • No Limits Kayak expeditions for diabetes (this year will include other disabilities). This will be our 4th year. • Director for the Banff Mountain Film Festival (Sitka, Alaska) • Director for the Banff Mountain Film Festival Radical Reels Tour (Sitka, Alaska) • Helped create Sugar Free Ocean, a No Limits film documenting one of our kayak expeditions • Helped create 'Over the Edge', a No Limits bungee jump fund raiser for diabetes • No Limits Open Water Swim and Kayak/Swim Clinic • Worked on the Over the Edge bungee crew for the Go Fast Games • Currently on the Planning Committee for the Bering Strait Swim, a relay swim from Russia to Alaska.
